Deadly Heat Conditions Will Rise By the End of the Century

Written by

If the summer heat is keeping you indoors, you aren’t alone. In fact, a new study reveals that 30 percent of the global population experiences potentially fatal heat levels for at least 20 days or more each year. Due to climate change, this issue is only getting worse, with scientists estimating that these heat levels will rise to as much as 75 percent by the end of the century.

To avoid this danger, the study cautions that greenhouse gas emissions will need to drop dramatically. Even with a reduction in emissions, the study says one in two people will face a risk of dying due to heat at least 20 days a year.

As is currently the case, some areas of the world will face more of a risk than others, including tropical regions, which already endure warmer temperatures for a larger percentage of the year than other parts of the world. With climate change, experts believe these areas could face year-round deadly heat by the end of the century.

For the purposes of the study, researchers used conditions that have been linked to a higher risk of mortality, which in general means conditions of 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit. However, lower temperatures with increased levels of humidity can also prove fatal.
