New Vaccine Could Reduce Global Malaria Fatalities by 90 Percent

Written by

Each year, more than 200 million people die from malaria, which hits Africa hardest. But a new vaccine could reduce malaria-related deaths by 90 percent by the year 2030.

Ghana, Kenya, and Malawi have been chosen as the first three countries to test the vaccine on hundreds of thousands of children. Children are most likely to die from the disease, since their immune systems aren’t as developed as adults. The vaccine won’t replace existing measures to prevent the disease, World Health Organization (WHO) officials have said. Acting as a supplement to those measures, though, WHO anticipates the injectable could save tens of thousands of people.

Currently, African nations use netting over beds and insecticides to keep their populations safe from the mosquitos responsible for spreading the disease. There has already been a worldwide effort to reduce malaria, which has resulted in a 62 percent reduction in fatalities since 2000. However, African officials say that the issue is still so widespread in their part of the world, they can’t tell if these measures have made a dent in the number of cases there.

Pharmaceutical giant GlaxoSmithKline developed the vaccine with the first phase of the project funded by GAVI, the Vaccine Alliance, as well as UNITAID and the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria.
