Want to Lose Weight? Eat More Cheese

Written by

Cheese is one of the first things people cut when they start a weight-loss program. But although the food is high in calories, a new study suggests that dairy could actually help with weight loss and overall health.

The study, which was conducted in Ireland, reviewed 1,500 adults, noting their dairy consumption and comparing it to their health. Study participants kept a food diary in which they recorded everything they ate over the course of four days. After the fact, researchers checked their cholesterol levels and similar metabolic health problems.

The results showed that those who consumed the most dairy products had a lower body mass index than those who ate fewer dairy products. Since foods like cheese and ice cream can be high in fat and calories, often those who restrict their diets for health reasons limit their consumption of those products. But the study could be an indication that dairy consumption is an important part of a healthy diet.

Especially notable from the study is the fact that cheese seemed to have a more positive impact on a person’s blood pressure than milk and other dairy products. Of course, the team emphasizes that a person’s overall health can’t be connected to one type of food product. The real issue is a person’s eating patterns on a daily basis.
