Panel of Scientists Predicts an A.I.-Filled Future Full of Challenges

Written by

Sci-fi writers love to speculate on a future filled with tech innovations, many of which we haven’t yet imagined. But a group of scientists recently offered their predictions for how artificial intelligence (A.I.) will shape our lives by the year 2030.

The panel was made up of great minds from several institutions, all invited by Stanford University to discuss the future of A.I. While A.I. is already a small part of everyday life, the experts feel that it will become increasingly more important in many facets of day-to-day living. As a result, the population will enjoy an improved economy and quality of life.

The year-long study is titled “Artificial Intelligence and Life in 2030.” The panel chair says in addition to the many benefits A.I. will bring to society are challenges that need to be addressed. There are many ethical concerns that need to be tackled before A.I. takes over fields such as transportation, healthcare, and education.

Currently, there are 16 separate agencies governing the use of A.I. in consumer products. In addition to concerns about responsibility for accidents in self-driven cars and medical device failures, the team also highlights the importance of managing issues such as discrimination among A.I. applications.
