Designing Web Sites with Artificial Intelligence

Written by

Sometime in Spring 2015, a new system for designing web sites will create a design and enrich content based on what the system believes it knows about you, the site owner.

The creators of The Grid, as the system is known, bill their program as something much different than a run-of-the-mill, DIY site builder. Instead, The Grid uses artificial intelligence  (AI) to process various forms of information -- text, videos, photos and URLs, to name a few -- and then fashion all of that into a site that's reflective of your personality.

As it says on The Grid's own site, which was created by using the same AI system, "As your needs grow, it evolves with you, effortlessly adapting to your needs. Want to add e-commerce? Social feeds? A different layout? The Grid just takes care of it. This is not a website builder. This is your personal AI web developer."

The system uses algorithms that scan the media on your site, picking up on color themes, and then applies those in ways that are intended to convey a consistent look and message. Typography colors are also adjusted automatically to provide good contrast with the background colors.

Rather than make use of templates, The Grid uses something called layout filters, which adjust to the user's content. How? "Change your layout filter & it just works," is the only explanation given. The system also uses smart face detection and automatically crops photos to fit any spot in the layout. As for e-commerce, The Grid takes care of that, too: "Have a product, add a price and a shopping cart magically appears on your site."

Founding Grid members can subscribe for $8/month.
