New Features Have People Buzzing About Apple's iOS7

Written by

The next big thing from Apple was recently unveiled at the company's World Wide Developers Conference (WWDC).

CEO Tim Cook gave everyone the lowdown on Apple's newest version of its operating system, iOS7, what Cook calls "the biggest change to iOS since the introduction of the iPhone."

Among the highlights of iOS7:

  • Safari -- Along with a new design, Apple's web browser allows users to keep open more than 8 tabs, all of which can be shuffled or spiked with a swipe motion. The tabs are also now 3D
  • Siri -- You can now choose between a male or female voice, which will direct you to data pulled from Wikipedia, Twitter and Bing -- an expansion of Siri's knowledge base
  • Control Center -- A new feature that allows users to access those settings that get fairly regular attention, like WiFi and brightness controls. Or the built-in flashlight feature
  • Camera/Photos -- iOS7 streamlines the management of photographs, including the creation of Shared Photostreams, where friends and others can add and share photos...a feature that might come in handy for, say, a road trip or extended family vacation
  • Air Drop -- Apple decided to add this feature from OS X. Users can share photos or files with other iOS users who happen to be within range. All without that silly bumping of devices that looks cute the first time people attempt it...in TV commercials, anyway

Apps update automatically now; the overall design uses more whites with hints of color; and, the iOS will soon be available for dashboards of certain car models.

Developers already have been provided access to the new system, which has an expected roll out sometime this fall.
