Taking on the mobile world: The Huawei way

Written by

Huawei who, you ask?

How about, “That Chinese company that grabbed attention at the recent Mobile World Congress trade show in Barcelona?” or “That OEM that plans to move up the food chain and aspires to become the number one brand in smartphones?”

This may sound crazy but it’s definitely not impossible. After all, who knew Samsung would topple Nokia in the smartphone war? Huawei ( pronounced Wa-way) is the Asian telecom giant that just might surprise you in the next few years.
As Apple, Samsung and Google struggle to cement their supremacy in the mobile world, I see a very real challenge coming from the likes of Huawei.

The latest IDC research report shows that Huawei ranked among the top-three smartphone vendors in the world. This isn’t surprising considering Huawei already has a strong foothold in the mobile market. If you haven’t heard of the company in Canada and US, it is because, for this Asian giant, growth came from selling products for mass consumption. The only thing they lacked was a brand name. The company has plans to change this and has begun to do so by launching a high-end smartphone- the Ascend Mate.

At the recent trade show, they pitched it as being “the fastest phone in the world”.
It is worth considering that as the mobile market in the developed world saturates, for smartphone vendors, growth will be coming from Asia and other developing markets where Huawei ,ZTE and other Asian vendors are seasoned players. They look ready to take on the big kids. Their product might be the next gadget you’d want in your pocket.
