A Clean and Green Charging Station

Refueling a vehicle while on a road trip often involves pulling over to a nearby rest area, strategically located next to the highway to save people the time and trouble of exiting onto local roads in search of an all-purpose pit stop.

While some roadside stops feature landscaped areas (often for walking pets), most are concrete and steel jungles that travelers understandably seek to exit as quickly and expeditiously as they entered. How much atmosphere can one expect in a place where cars and trucks belch exhaust and drop puddles of oil?

Danish-based COBE architects has created a nature-based solution to the "Why would I actually want to rest here?" dilemma of the modern roadside stop -- at least, for those that are recharging electric vehicles (EVs).

At first glance, the solution looks fairly obvious to pull off, since there theoretically wouldn't be many (if any) gas-powered vehicles around to foul the air. Upon further review, though, the concept has appeal for another reason: It simply takes longer to charge an EV than to fill up a car with gasoline. Given that travelers would have to spend more time zapping their EVs, it only makes sense to offer surroundings that could allow them to recharge themselves before resuming their journeys.

The charging park features an assortment of trees to provide that natural touch (not to mention some needed shade), and the roofs over the parking spaces are topped with solar panels that provide energy to the chargers. Other sections of roof remain open so that trees can grow and expand.

Over the next couple of years, eight charging stations are planned for Denmark, with another 40 in Sweden and Norway.
