Could a Newly-Discovered Stone Be from Space?

Generally, when geologists find rocks and stones, they can immediately identify them. Even if they aren’t familiar with a discovery, they can trace it to something found in the immediate area. But a pebble recovered more than two decades ago in Egypt so far doesn’t match anything previously found in our solar system.

The pebble, named the Hypatia stone, has been studied extensively over the years, with scientists announcing in 2013 that it had not come from Earth. This was based on the compounds found on the stone, which can’t be traced to anything on our surface.

This announcement has led to speculation that the rock may have come from space. However, research ruled out that the pebble had fallen from any comet or meteorite known to scientists, and the lack of silicate matter makes it different from other material that has fallen to Earth from outer space.

Perhaps most interesting is the interior substance of the stone, which the team compared to a fruitcake that has shattered after falling to the ground. Meteorites are similar to Earth’s surface, containing large amounts of silicon with a smaller makeup of carbon. Hypatia was the opposite, with a large showing of carbon and small amounts of silicon.
