Vending Machines for Homeless Launch in U.K.

Action Hunger is self-described as "a charity with a new approach to combating homelessness."

Part of that approach is distributing and maintaining vending machines that provide free clothing and food in various places all over the United Kingdom.

Items distributed by the machines include energy bars, chocolate, sandwiches, water, fresh fruit, and crisps, as well as antibacterial lotion, books, socks, toothbrush and toothpaste combination packs, sanitary towels, and books. Much of the food gathered by Action Hunger comes from organizations that wish to find effective ways to reduce food waste.

Only those in need have permission to access the machines by the use of a special key card given out by Action Hunger's partner organizations.

The group's web page says, "At the most elementary level, Action Hunger's machines provide access for the most vulnerable in our society to satiate the most basic of needs — that of sustenance."

A Seattle-based nonprofit recently launched an app that is designed to address the plight of survival encountered by people dealing with homelessness.

WeCount allows users to receive or donate usable items that are necessary for day-to-day living, such as personal items and bedding. The exchange of items is intended to take place on a hyper-local basis between individuals, the larger community, and social service groups.

According to a press release, the introduction of WeCount marks the first time that a peer-to-peer model has effectively been used to assist personalized item donations to homeless people. Peer-to-peer sharing might be easier recognized as the kind of model used in such enterprises as AirBnB, Lyft, and DogVacay.

WeCount co-founder Jonathan Sposato says, "This fundamentally changes how we can address the critical issues of survival facing the homeless populations in our communities. As a community, we can improve the lives of others to make homelessness rare, brief and one time."
