Sleep is a rare commodity in many households, especially as children find themselves loaded down with more homework. But lack of sleep has been tied to serious health risks, the most recent of which is increased risk factors for type 2 diabetes.

In a recent study of 4,500 British kids, researchers found that children who got less sleep each night actually had an increased risk of insulin resistance, as well as having more of a tendency to be overweight. Perhaps most disturbing about the study, though, was the fact that as little as one hour’s reduction in sleep can lead to an increased risk of diabetes.

Wine consumption has already been linked to cardiovascular health and lower inflammation risk, but a new study gives consumers another reason to enjoy that daily glass. When consumed in moderation, researchers say red wine can prevent Type 2 diabetes, a leading cause of blindness, kidney failure, heart attacks, and more.

A previous health study conducted between 2007 and 2012 surveyed 70,000 adults on their lifestyle and health habits. During the five-year period, 859 men and 887 women developed diabetes, but those in the study who were at the lowest risk for the disease were moderate drinkers.

Researchers Seek to Learn More About Diabetes

November 14th was World Diabetes Day, reminding the medical community and the consumer market just how much work still needs to be done in finding a cure. There are currently 400 million people worldwide living with the disease and that number is expected to increase to 640 million by 2040.

With so many people affected, it’s important to understand the behaviors that are contributing to the epidemic. Experts believe that obesity rate growth in America and Europe has led to an increase in diabetes diagnoses, due in large part to the more sedentary lifestyles residents now live. This combines with the poor dietary choices many people make on a daily basis to create a higher at-risk population than in previous generations.
