Navy Pilots Spooked by 2004 UFO Encounter

As part of a once-secret Department of Defense program to look into reports of unidentified flying objects (UFOs), a pair of Navy pilots was flying over the Pacific Ocean in the vicinity of San Diego when the tandem received an odd transmission from a radio operator aboard the U.S.S. Princeton.

Seems that the U.S. military had been monitoring unusual aircraft in the area for a couple of weeks. Reports indicated that the objects being tracked would sometimes hover for several minutes, dive tens of thousands of feet, and make erratic maneuvers.

Cmdr. David Fravor and Lt. Cmdr. Jim Slaight were asked to take a closer look and eventually spotted one of the aircraft, which measured roughly 40 feet in length and was seen hovering over the ocean at an altitude of about 50 feet.

Crop Circles Explained...Kind Of

The theories range from visits from artistic-minded extraterrestrials to old-fashioned pranks carried out by locals just to get the rumor mill going again about possible visits from artistic-minded extraterrestrials.

While supporters of those two general theories abound, is there a more scientific, reliable explanation for why crop circles appear -- especially when they're in elaborate patterns that don't seem like they could be the work of random weather events?

LiveScience reports that the mystery of crop circles dates back over the centuries to as early as 1678, the date of a woodcut that depicts what seem to be oat stalks arranged in a circle. But there's some doubt about that, as some believe that the artwork merely depicts a superstition from those times known as the "mowing devil," which refers to a farmer who didn't want to pay a fee to have his field mowed and supposedly would rather pay the devil himself to do the job.

An interesting structure was recently spotted in the ice of Antarctica, leading UFO enthusiasts to speculate that it might be extraterrestrial in nature. Google satellite images show the staircase, located deep in the wilderness of the polar region of the continent.

The theory states that aliens used the staircase as part of a landing site at some point. A member of a UFO conspiracy theory forum discovered the staircase while looking at satellite images following a debate about why high-profile personalities like former astronaut Buzz Aldrin visited Antarctica recently.
